Commercial Photographer Chris McLennan’s biography typifies the small-town boy who made it big. Growing up in the rural farming community of Riversdale, not far from Queenstown in New Zealand’s picturesque south island, Chris began his photography career in 1988 running a wedding and portrait studio out of nearby Invercargill. But it wasn’t long before his love of skiing and the magic of the southern alps pulled him to the bright lights of Queenstown, where he set up shop and pursued commercial clients in the adventure tourism sector. As his reputation grew and the quality of his imagery began to attract notice further a field, Chris was soon regularly jumping the ditch to shoot for tourism entities throughout Australia and the South Pacific.
Fast forward 26 years and Chris now boasts big name clients from one end of the globe to the other. He has worked on commercial shoots in over 50 different countries to date and his stunning travel imagery has been recognised with a string of international awards to his name. Both his work and his standing in the photographic community have been acknowledged through partnerships on an international level with many of the industry’s top brands including as an Ambassador for Nikon, alongside endorsement relationships with Lowepro, Lexar and AquaTech. Chris is an Ambassador for computing brand HP and exclusively uses their DreamColor products to create the recognisable style of his brightly coloured and vibrant photographic work.
As a passionate and dedicated photographer, Chris has also been involved in a number of highly successful personal projects, not least of which was his YouTube viral video Sensation “Car-L meets the Lions” (7 million+ views), a behind the scenes look at a very unique photo shoot he completed in Botswana which then featured on national TV news programs and in newspapers all over the world.
Chris provides guidance and inspiration to photography enthusiasts globally by way of his Travel Photography app “PhotoTorial” released in 2012, his highly successful and annual photography competition the “Travel Photography Awards” (launched 2013) – which offers the chance not only to win photographic gear but for one lucky entrant a one-on-one private photo tour to French Polynesia with Chris – and lastly through his range of Photo Tour workshops on offer each year to locations such as Norway, Alaska, Africa and New Zealand.
When not travelling the world in search of his next photographic adventure, Chris enjoys family life living on the “wild” West Coast of rural Auckland.

Chris McLennan exclusively uses the HP DreamColor range of products to handle all of his image post production and general computing workflow. So its no surprise that one of the questions he most frequently gets asked is how he creates such vibrant colour in his images?
Simple… 1.08 billion colours to be exact. (Compare that to only 16 million which is the norm).
DreamColor display technology is used by many of the world’s leading animation studios and visual effect artists. If you don’t know what that means, grab the kids and go watch “Shrek”, “Avatar” or “Lord of the Rings” on DVD or Blu-Ray… You’ll soon get the idea. Quad HD with 10-bit colour and CRT class blacks gives you some pretty amazing results.
But its not only the colour accuracy that is a major feature in Chris’s workflow, it is the speed, performance and durability – both on the road using his Zbook mobile workstation and back in the office with the Z420 and Z27x display panel – that Chris relies so heavily on. With the latest model D810 cameras that Chris uses every day, file sizes are huge and not only storage but processing power must meet those demands. HP products are robust, reliable and bursting with speed, using the latest technology in both graphics and hardware performance.
If its time to super charge your image processing power then drop us a line and we can help point you in the right direction, (or we can even organise a machine for you). Check out the specs below to see the system that Chris uses:
